Stevens, Rich & Bradley: Cosmology in 20th Century American Poetry

Written in Spring 2000 in partial fulfillment of both University Honors College and English Honors program requirements.

Summary: A look at how three 20th century poets view and use cosomology in their works. The following quote was taken from the introduction of the paper.

Cosmology is the study of the large scale structure of the universe. Its central questions overlap with those of astronomy and philosophy. Poets Wallace Stevens, Adrienne Rich and George Bradley employ diverse approaches to the treatment of cosmological ideas. Stevens creates a universe within a mountain in his poem Chocorua to its Neighbor. Later in the century, Rich finds woman’s place in a patriarchal structure in “Planetarium.” In the 1990s, Bradley's poem "M31 in Andromeda" deals with mankind’s relationship with the macrocosm. These poems suggest a shift in perspective during the 20th Century as humanity gradually takes precedence over the individual.

Undergraduate English Major Online Handbook

Undergraduate English Major Handbook

Wrote content, gathered images, designed, and created an online handbook for the University of Arizona English Department as an independent study project. Used PageMill in conjunction with handwritten html code. Cleaned up some code and text for the purposes of this portfolio. Note: Some information and University of Arizona links are outdated. To the best of my knowledge, this handbook is no longer online, except here.
